Corona Briefer Recommends 10 Most Exciting Pandemic Movies

The movie world has dealt with pandemics on various occasions although we can relate to them more with the protracted coronavirus crisis. As the audience becomes more interested in paramedic movies, we have selected the 10 most exciting films for the current occasion in which an illness throws the world into chaos. Yes, we are aware that it can seem grim to intentionally watch films about the global coronavirus crisis. But let's be honest: you can often deal with serious situations better if you look at a few fictitious versions of a disaster scenario, albeit from the audience's safe distance. We have put together the most compelling film examples of pandemics. Here are our top 10:

Children of Men

Virus type: unknown

What is it about?

In 2027, the world is on the brink of collapse. No children have been born anywhere in the world for almost twenty years. The consequences are war, terror, refugee tragedies, and chaos. When a young woman suddenly becomes pregnant, the former activist Theo (Clive Owen) is supposed to take her to a safe place.

Our tip:

Multiple Oscar-winner Alfonso Cuaron paints a gloomy, terrifyingly current version of the future of a childless world with gray, magnificently staged pictures. A glimmer of hope flashes in the desolation thanks to the star-studded cast and breathtaking one-shot sequence in the turmoil of war. A masterpiece!

Contagion

Virus type: Virus MEV-1

What is it about?

The synopsis of the Contagion is likened to the coronavirus pandemic most. A deadly virus spreads rapidly across the world. A fanatical blogger manages to create panic, which throws the world further into chaos. Meanwhile, an international team of doctors strives to find a cure as they run out of time.

Our tip:

Because the situation in the film is very similar to the one we go through in COVID-19 times. Spoiler alert:In the end, a cure will be found and should thus give some hope. In addition, the extremely realistically presented film by Oscar winner Steven Soderbergh with top actors such as Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Gwyneth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, and Bryan Cranston has a first-class cast.

Outbreak

Virus type: Motoba virus (Ebola)

What is it about?

In Zaire (today: the Democratic Republic of the Congo), a terrible disease breaks out that can quickly lead to death. When the so-called Motoba virus - a variant of Ebola - also appeared a little later in the USA, virologists had to fight both the virus and the military in order to save a small town or the entire country from being extinguished.

Our tip:

Outbreak is maybe something like the mother of the pandemic films. The film has all the ingredients: a lot of stars, including Dustin Hoffman, Morgan Freeman, Donald Sutherland, Rene Russo, Kevin Spacey, a cute monkey with nasty viruses, an infected small town, the military with very own intentions, plus a good helping of thrillers, conspiracy and a spectacular race against time.

Twelve Monkeys

Virus Type: An unknown virus.

What is it about?

In the future, a virus has killed humanity. To get to the bottom of the evil, a prisoner is sent through time. A group called "Twelve Monkeys" is supposed to be responsible for this, and it is precisely these guys that the traveler should now take care of.

Our tip:

It's also about a virus, but director Terry Gilliam prefers to have fun with the weird time travel scenario, where he sometimes sends his protagonist a few years too far back in time. Brad Pitt can also be seen in one of his weirdest roles, which incidentally earned him an Oscar nomination. The film is based on the famous French short film La Jetée by Chris Marker, which was inspired by Hitchock's Vertigo.

I am legend

Virus type: A measles virus modified to cure cancer mutates.

What is it about?

When scientists looked for a cure for cancer, they released a dangerous virus that wiped out almost all humanity. In New York's metropolis, there is only the biologist Robert Neville, who still hopes to find more survivors.

Our tip:

It's fascinating to watch how Will Smith is "free of storms" in New York City during the day and doing all kinds of things. However, director Francis Lawrence tends to tighten the tension at night - even if the bad things that appear then look a bit weak compared to today's standards.

The Crazies

Virus type: Rabies virus (biological weapon)

What is it about?

In the small town of Ogden Marsh, Iowa, an armed man suddenly runs onto the field during a baseball game and has to be shot by Sheriff Dutton (Timothy Olyphant). Soon more and more city dwellers are turning violent and starting to murder. The cause is a military plane that crashed with a biological weapon and contaminated the drinking water - and of course, the military wants to cover this up.

Our tip:

The remake of the same name's film by zombie godfather George A. Romero knows how to tighten the tension screw effectively. The rural, small-town is gradually being destroyed as the good city dwellers become more aggressive, and the likable protagonists have to fight for survival in multiple ways. A gripping horror film in which no fingernail is left nibbled off.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Virus type: ALZ-113 virus, which leads to the "Simian Flu Pandemic"

What is it about?

Will Rodman (James Franco) is a young scientist researching remedies for humans. In a state-of-the-art laboratory, he is testing a promising drug in which Will has high hopes on monkeys. The remedy seems to be working. But suddenly, it causes unexpected reactions. Through detours, it becomes a danger for all of humanity.

Our tip:

The film explains how the Planet of the Apes came about, whereby of course it ruins one of the greatest twists in film history. But so be it. Because the prequel trilogy, to which "Dawn" and "War» Belongs, shows how man, with his addiction to control and playing with God himself, tinkers with his own downfall and so soon behaves in a more monkey manner than the apes.

28 days later...

Virus Type: Rage Virus (Zombies)

What is it about?

A group of British activists want to free monkeys from an experimental laboratory. However, these animals are infected with an anger virus that spreads instantly to humans, turning them mad without human reason. 28 days later, the injured bicycle courier Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up in a hospital and has to find his way around the world overrun by the infected.

Our tip:

With the idea that anger leads to the downfall of mankind, Danny Boyle indirectly gave the starting signal for the renaissance of the zombie in the noughties. The images of a deserted London are scary, and the idea of how quickly civilization comes to an end and people turn against each other is creepy.

Antiviral

Virus type: All kinds of viruses

What is it about?

In the near future: There is nothing better for fans of celebrities than to let the diseases of their darlings pass on to them. When Syd March, a Lucas Clinic salesman, ignorantly infected himself with a deadly virus, he was mercilessly hunted by the competition.

Our tip:

Ok, the premise is a bit hollow. Even so, Brandon Cronenberg's (son of David) film is intriguing in an absurd way. Something like antiviral has rarely been seen before, and since the characters in this film are deliberately infected with viruses, this makes the WTF work so wonderfully different from the other films on this list, where the protagonists are involuntarily ravaged by diseases.

Pontypool

Virus Type: Speech Virus

What is it about?

In the Canadian town of Pontypool, the small radi
