Coronavirus Germany News on January 21, 2021: Decrease in Incidence Value

The RKI is still reporting more than 20,000 new infections with the corona virus, but the trend is clearly pointing downwards. The 7-day incidence has dropped to its lowest level in more than eleven weeks.

The number of new corona infections in Germany has recently dropped significantly. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the 7-day incidence at 119.0 - the lowest value since November 1. Within one day, however, 20,398 new infections were still reported. In addition, 1013 new deaths were recorded within 24 hours.

The 7-day incidence, i.e. the number of new infections reported to the health authorities per 100,000 inhabitants and week, had fallen continuously over the past ten days. It had reached its previous high of 197.6 shortly before Christmas. The differences between the federal states are large, however: Thuringia has the highest incidences with 225.0 and Brandenburg with 203.3. Bremen has the lowest value with 76.6.

5,000 new infections less than a week ago

Exactly one week ago, the RKI had recorded 25,164 new infections and 1244 new deaths - the previous high - within 24 hours. The highest number of new infections was reported on December 18, at 33,777 - but this included 3500 late reports.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the RKI has counted a total of 2,088,400 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher as many infections are not recognized. The total number of people who died from or with Corona rose to 49,783. The RKI stated the number of those who had recovered at around 1,762,200.

R-value unchanged at 0.87

The nationwide seven-day R-value remains unchanged at 0.87. This means that 100 infected people theoretically infect 87 more people. The value represents the occurrence of the infection eight to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a long time, the infection process subsides.

Because of the continued high number of infections, Chancellor Angela Merkel and the heads of government of the federal states extended the current lockdown to February 14th and tightened it at the same time.
