Coronavirus Updates on January 9, 2021

The whole world is facing an unprecedented health crisis due to the coronavirus pandemic. There are more than 89 million coronavirus cases and 1.9 million deaths worldwide. Discover the coronavirus updates in the world as of Saturday, January 9, 2021.

As Germany is extending its confinement until January 31, the United Kingdom sets sad records with more than 68,000 new cases and more than 1,300 deaths in the last 24 hours. In Canada, Quebec is entering containment for four weeks as of today. The Japanese Prime Minister declares a state of emergency in Tokyo and its inner suburbs. The United States registers more than 300,000 confirmed cases in 24 hours, which is a new record. The number of new cases of infection and deaths in 24 hours is exploding in South Africa.

On January 9, 2021, the number of coronavirus cases and deaths reached 89,580,537 (834,035 added on January 8) and 1,933,879 (13,837 added on January 8). 

In the United States, the number of new cases every day is still skyrocketing. It now stands at 326,343 infections identified in the last 24 hours, a new record since the start of the pandemic. On January 9, 2021, the country has 22,456,850 cases. The number of deaths today is 4,086 deaths in 24 hours or 378,149 deaths in total. After the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine, Moderna's vaccine is also authorized in the United States. The United States has registered more than 326,000 new cases, 46,000 more than yesterday's previous record. 

In Brazil, the number of new infections remains very high, 52,173 in 24 hours. On January 9, the country records 942 deaths in 24 hours and declares 8,019,495 cases recorded in total and 201,578 deaths. The country passes the milestone of 8 million cases on January 9, 2021. " Brazil is bankrupt, I can not do anything, "announces President Jair Bolsonaro. Brazil passes the milestone of 200,000 deaths since the start of the pandemic on January 8, 2021.

In Canada, there are 17,549 new cases in 48 hours out of 644,335 in total, a new record since the start of the pandemic, and 16,707 deaths, including 338 since Thursday. Faced with an upsurge in cases, Quebec decrees general confinement of 4 weeks with a curfew from January 9, 2021.
In France, the health authorities' latest report concerning the COVID-19 pandemic reports at least 2,747,135 cases in total, including at least 19,814 in the last 24 hours. This Friday, January 8, 2021, 590 deaths in 24 hours or 67,431 in total. The number of EHPAD and EMS deaths shows  20,616 (+314) deaths. The total number of deaths in hospitals is 46,815 (+276 in 24 hours).

In the United Kingdom, there are 68,053 new cases in 24 hours, a new record since the start of the pandemic, with 2,957,472 cases in total since the start of the pandemic. The country counts this Friday, January 8, 2021, 1,325 deaths in 24 hours or 79,833 deaths in total. A mutation of the virus in the south of England worries the British authorities. The UK starts injecting AstraZeneca / Oxford vaccine. After Scotland, England is completely reconfigured and closes its schools until March announces Boris Johnson. Ireland announced new measures of restrictions that January 7, 2021, including the schools and construction sites.

In Japan, the coronavirus cases continued to climb with 6906 new infections in 24 hours, or the highest number of cases in 24 of the country since the beginning of the pandemic. There are 265,299 cases recorded in total and 3,857 (+66 in 24 hours) deaths this Friday, January 8. Japan, which faces the third wave, closes its borders to non-resident foreigners from December 28 to January 2021. The Japanese Prime Minister declares a state of emergency in Tokyo and its suburbs this Thursday, January 7, 2021.

The number of new cases is rising in China, which reports 27 new infections with Covid-19 in 24 hours. The country counts 87,363 in total and 4,634 (+0) dead on January 9, 2021. Beijing is reconfiguring ten sectors of Shunyi district following the emergence of 27 coronavirus new cases. A first case of the coronavirus variant is detected in China. More than 11 million inhabitants were confined following the appearance of several covid cases. 

The pandemic is growing in Africa, and the number of new cases and deaths in 24 hours is exploding. In South Africa, there are 1,192,570 (+21 980) cases recorded on January 9, 2021, and 32 425 (616) died. In South Africa, a new variant of the most "worrying" virus "communicable" was discovered. Since the start of the pandemic, the country has recorded more than a million cases. It bans alcohol sales once again and makes masks compulsory for fear of being overwhelmed by the second wave. South Korea account on January 9, 641 new infections and 67,999 cases in total for 1,100 deaths ( 19 in 24). Faced with a third wave even more violent than the previous ones, the country is strengthening the country's rules of distancing. In the capital, Seoul, the ban on gatherings of more than four people is extended. The national vaccination campaign is expected to start in February.

Zimbabwe returned in confinement for the next 30 days this Sunday, January 3, 2021. The country recorded 19,660 cases of coronavirus, which 950 the last 24 hours and counts 468 dead in total since the beginning of the pandemic, with 22 yesterday.

There are 2,048 new cases in Belgium in 24 hours, which makes 660,703 cases on January 9, 2021. There have been 56 new deaths in the last 24 hours, which means 19,992 deaths in total. In Belgium, non-essential businesses can reopen. On the other hand, "contact" professions such as hairdressers and beauty salons remain closed until February 1. From December 25, 2020, it is mandatory to present a negative test to travel to Belgium. Belgium makes quarantine compulsory after more than 48 hours of stay in France.

Poland currently has 1,365,645 (+8,763) cases and 30,574 (+333 ) deaths due to Covid-19. Poland announced a new series of restrictions against the new coronavirus. Since December 28, 2020, the country has entered partial confinement, notably with the closure of cinemas and most stores in shopping malls and a total switch to distance education at least until January 17, 2021.
